Pioneer Mutual Credit Union awarded Global Women's Leadership Network Scholarship

18 May 18

Beth Welsh of Pioneer Mutual Credit Union (PMCU) has been awarded one of five scholarships to join the credit union sector’s Global Women’s Leadership Network and will begin her scholarship at this year’s World Credit Union Conference in Singapore.

In 2009, World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) established the Global Women’s Leadership Network to tackle the industry’s gender gap while also leveraging resources to strengthen the economic security of women and their families.

The Global Women’s Leadership Network is dedicated to forcing a gender balance among leadership positions. The Network provides an annual scholarship to female leaders within the credit union industry so they may develop new skills, tools and resources to make an impact. Since 2009, Global Women has awarded 47 scholarships to women from 22 countries. Scholarships are made possible through funding from annual membership donations and sponsorships, including the generous support of CUNA Mutual Group.

Beth has been awarded a complimentary Network membership and will participate in the 2018 World Credit Union Conference in Singapore on July 14 – 18. This year the council is introducing the new Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) conference track which combines the previously separate Global Women’s Leadership Network and World Council Young Credit Union Professional (WYCUP) Forum events. The D&I Program is dedicated to advancing women and young leaders worldwide and leverages opportunities presented by the World Credit Union Conference to promote professional development throughout the conference week.

Focusing on professional development, participants will engage in interactive D&I sessions, expand their knowledge and grow business relationships. Featuring internationally renowned keynote speakers, working luncheons and roundtable discussions, breakout sessions on diversity, gender inclusion and growing young leadership, participants will walk away with personal action plans, new skills, and professional resources.

Speaking about her delight to be awarded a scholarship for this year’s conference, Beth said: “I am honoured and excited to be given the opportunity to attend the World Credit Union Conference and to join the Global Women’s Leadership Network. It will be an amazing learning experience, and fantastic to network with our sector leaders. I am looking forward to sharing the learning and inspiration I take from Singapore not only within Pioneer Mutual but the wider credit union community.”

It is vital for our sector to continue to work on advancing the gender gap, especially with those in senior roles in the financial industry. Last year at the WOCCU conference In Vienna the “distinguished service award” was presented to The Global Women’s Leadership Network. This is the highest honour to be awarded by the World Council of Credit Unions, which is given because of outstanding contributions to international credit union development.

Susan Mitchell, Chair of the Network, accepted the award on GWLN behalf and said: “We are changing lives and making a measurable difference in the lives of women. This is a human initiative. We need all people of the world to come together as a co-operative movement.”
