British credit unions travel to Singapore for the 2018 WOCCU Conference

20 Jul 18

This week British credit unions attended the 2018 World Credit Union Conference in Singapore, where over 1,400 delegates from 58 countries were in attendance.

Participants heard from world-class speakers, networked and engaged with colleagues from around the globe and learned from leading industry experts. The conference offered top-class educational sessions on key topics, networking opportunities and excellent team-building environments aimed at facilitating and growing decision making.

Participating countries cheered on the 58 flag bearers during the colourful international flag parade. Carrying the flag for Great Britain was Pioneer Mutual Credit Unions Beth Welsh. Beth was awarded one of five scholarships to join the credit union sector’s Global Women’s Leadership Network and a complimentary networking pass at this year’s conference in Singapore.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, WOCCU Chair Brian McCrory said: “We must be innovators, social entrepreneurs, and skilled business leaders with the ability to run efficient businesses while deeply rooted in the philosophy of the co-operative spirit and a commitment to service.

“We are passionately aware that each of us both as individuals and as members of World Council, and as a movement, are about so much more than business. We exist to provide our members with a not-for-profit service that empowers and enables them and through this activity, we generate sufficient surplus to reward our members, fund our operations and create additional social dividends for our communities.” He encouraged delegates to make the most of the international event. “As credit union leaders, we collectively commit to the highest standards, to learning, to improving our skillsets, to embracing change, for and on behalf of our members,” he added.

ABCUL’s Head of Policy and Communications Matt Bland also attended the conference and said: “ABCUL is proud to be a member of the World Council of Credit Unions. The World Credit Union Conference is a tremendous opportunity for credit union staff, directors and volunteers to share experiences and learn from credit union professionals from a range of countries.

“This year's conference has provided delegates with inspirational examples of best practice, valuable technical know-how, and a chance to build networks and relationships".
